Wayne T. Shaia M.D.

Dr. Wayne has a long history of dedication to the specific field of Otology/Neurotology. After
completing his Ear, Nose and Throat Residency training at Medical College of
Virginia, Richmond, VA he also completed a competitive two year fellowship
at the prestigious Michigan Ear Institute in Farmington Hills, MI. During
his fellowship, Dr. Wayne was fortunate to be able to perform hundreds of surgeries
under the guidance of our country's most knowledgeable ear surgeons. Returning
to Richmond, Virginia in 2006, Dr. Wayne entered practice with his father Fred
T. Shaia, M.D., who at that time had served the Greater Richmond region for
over 30 years, caring for patients with complex ear and balance issues.
Since 2006, Wayne Shaia M.D. has taken great pride in solving complex ear
conditions and performs all of the surgeries for the patients at the Balance
and Ear Center. He instructs Ear, Nose, and Throat residents from the
Medical College of Virginia weekly in his clinic as well as instructing them
in the operating room. His sub-certification in Skull Base Surgery allows
him the expertise in performing all aspects of skull base tumor management
(including Meningiomas, Acoustic Neuromas, Glomus tumors, and other benign
and malignant tumors of the skull base)
Wayne T. Shaia has authored several scientific articles in the medical literature
regarding ear disease, including topics such as Benign Paroxymal Positional
Vertigo Superior Canal Dehiscence, , Auditory Neuropathy, Meniere's Disease
and worked with surgical companies to develop new and improved materials and
techniques for surgical ear reconstruction. TOP
Fred T. Shaia M.D.
Otologist/Neurotologist
Fred T. Shaia, M.D. trained as a resident physician in Ear, Nose, and Throat
at St. Luke's Medical Center in Cleveland Ohio and completed his residency
training in 1969. After completing his residency, Dr. Fred Shaia was
invited to enter into sub-specialty training as a fellow at the prestigious
House Ear Clinic in Los Angeles. He was fortunate to train under the
direct supervision of several of the pioneers of ear surgery during his fellowship,
and witnessed the development of acoustic neuroma surgery, surgery for Meniere's
disease as well as early cochlear implant.
Fred T. Shaia, M.D. entered into private practice in Richmond, Virginia in
1972 and is the founding father of the Balance and Ear Center. He has provided
dedicated and focused care for patients with complex ear conditions for Central
Virginia for the past 37 years. Dr. Fred Shaia is also credited with
performing Virginia's first cochlear implantation in 1980. He has been extremely
active in supporting the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery
over the years with research presentations.
Fred T. Shaia, M.D. has dedicated his entire professional life to patients
with hearing and balance conditions. His practice is limited to caring
for patients with vertigo and balance conditions, as well as patients with
skull based tumors and hearing loss. Patients seeing Fred T. Shaia,

Michelle Brooks, Au.D. F-AAA, CCC-A

Director of Audiology
Dr. Michelle Brooks obtained her doctoral degree in Audiology from Salus University in 2009, Master of Science degree from Rush University in 2002 and Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders from St. Louis University in 1999. Dr. Brooks holds an Audiology license through the Board of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology for the Commonwealth of Virginia and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology. She also has Certificate of Clinical Competence through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association and a hearing aid specialist license for the state of Virginia. Dr. Brooks has experience with audiological and vestibular diagnostic testing, hearing aids and BAHA implants. TOP
Andrea Gohmert, M.S., CCC-A

Director of Pediatrics
Andrea Gohmert received her Master of Science from Vanderbilt University in
1992. She graduated from Baylor University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science
in Education with a specialty in Speech-Language Pathology. Andrea holds the
Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology, and is licensed to practice
Audiology by the state of Virginia. Andrea specializes in cochlear implants,
pediatrics, and vestibular testing. Andrea has been a staff audiologist at
the Balance and Ear Center since 2007. TOP
Debbie Cox, M.S., F-AAA
Audiologist –
Director of Hearing Aids
Debbie Cox received her Bachelor's and Masters degree from Arizona State University.
She has 20 years experience in the field of Audiology and is licensed as an
Audiologist and a Hearing Aid Dispenser in Virginia. She is also a Fellow
of the American Audiology Association. A native of Connecticut, for the past
10 years she has been happy to call Virginia home. She joined the Balance
and Ear Center staff in September of 2007 as the Director of Virginia Hearing
Aid Center, a subsidiary of Balance and Ear. Debbie enjoys working with people
and hearing aids to help them reach their full hearing potential. TOP
Emily Shelburne, Au.D. F-AAA, CCC-A
Audiologist
Dr. Emily Shelburne received her Doctorate of Audiology from East Tennessee State University in 2011 following a Bachelor of Science in Communication Disorders from the University of Virginia in 2007. Dr. Shelburne completed her residency at the University of Virginia Health System. She holds an Audiology license in Virginia, hearing aid specialist license in Virginia, Certificate of Clinical Competence through the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Audiology. Dr. Shelburne specializes in vestibular and electrophysiological measures including adult and pediatric audiological and vestibular diagnostic testing procedures. She also has experience in hearing aid evaluations and hearing aid fittings. TOP
